I just saw the GIF you made with the Sherlock Holmes poster (Jim Groom shared it) - I love it. I'm actually doing GIF's for my final project, though I haven't gotten many done. The way the picture moves, especially how it wiggles out of the frame, is truly Python-esque. Great job.

(I couldn't find it on your blog, or I would've commented on it there)

It's just a matter of time before "mauve" and "taupe" go the way of "sauce" and "cause". In fact, I claim that "mauve" has already gone that way, and the dictionaries haven't caught up yet.

I'm going to now also pronounce "taupe" as "tawp", for consistency. There are very few English words where "au" is pronounced "oh" after all, and I'm happy to do my part to help stamp them out. :-)

Hee, Jenn, on the table of prizes at the Halloween thing there was a book about gangsters that I almost grabbed for you but then I realized that it was probably utterly useless compared to the sources you have, AND the owl was cuter. =P

It's great to read someone else's description of their seizures. Mine were much more interesting years ago before I started taking all this medication. But I still have some pretty amazing "white-noise" and high-pitched ringing auras. My advice to you is to keep writing---both for yourself and to inform others.
Cheers!!!

Interesting. I can edit your comment. I will not change your text, for that would be rude.

Definitely give them a shot. Here are the ones I'd personally recommend.

-Small Gods
-Reaper Man
-Hogfather
-Thief of Time
-Monstrous Regiment

These pretty much stand alone, although Reaper Man, Hogfather and Thief of Time dabble a bit in other works. Definitely read Hogfather before Thief of Time, as it helps.

----

The following books contain Sam Vimes, who is, with the possible exception of Death, the best character in Discword (according to Pratchett himself...I got a chance to ask him). Reading them in order is recommended.

-Guards! Guards!
-Men at Arms
-Feet of Clay
-Jingo
-The Fifth Elephant
-Night Watch
-Thud

Enjoy!

The wmv video doesn't play automatically in the browser, anyway you can upload this video to YouTube? It will accept WMV files, then just embed it in a post here.

Love the live Merton, amazing how quick this stuff blows up. First your in your house playing paino, then you are on a stage in front of 2000 people. Crazy.

That for the new installment, I pulled the comic feed into the class site so we can follow it more closely.

Comics are not easy to do and they are time consuming, so you might want to throw in a curve ball and do a normal six slided digital story with pictures too, they are simpler and get your point across faster.

I like the idea with the dream because you can throw in all kinds of wacky ideas since we really don't know what you dream about. Make your stories fun, interesting and humorous to get some good laughs from the class.

Emily,

i think your dream blog is a brilliant exmple of digital storytellign quite frankly, and if you can start thinking about what it might mean as a form of storytelling, I would love to consider how you might frame in in this light. it is all in the argument.

As for the bat shark repellent, you must be referring to one of the great scenes of 60s TV right?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0UJaprpxrk

Also, as for the format/delivery engine for your comic, check out ComicPress:
http://comicpress.org/about/

Philip Hofer is one of the designers, and great guy, you can follow him on twitter even :)

But there are others apps besides WordPress, so don't feel beholden.

Awesome start...

<blockquote>But so much of web 2.0 is opinions, I don’t think we should even try defining it. If someone wants to write a story on the web, they have tons of tools at their disposal to make their story happen, that’s all that matters.</blockquote>

I don't think it is all opinion by any meansl, I think there's a fair amount of argument and discussion about what the technology means, how it works, and what it's potential and pitfalls are. And this could eb a palce for that as well, arguments are more than a opinions, they forward an theory or idea and use examples and some form of logic or reasoning to make a case for what they are suggesting, Levine and Alexander do this well when framing the new examples of storytelling emerging in Web 2.0,

It's easy to build a straw man around a term and suggest it has no meanings, that's an opinion. But framing a definition of storytelling around a series of examples and emerging practices and principles is an argument. Levine and Alexander list more than thirty solid examples of stories that harness some of the non-linear, distributed examples of storytelling and narrative that are markedly different from what we might imagine as more traditional, unilateral media like films, novels, or poems. Now this is not to disavow the amazing import of thee forms, but rather to suggest how a digital form may have different rules of engagment and ideas of narrative boundaries, interaction, etc. Seems like the the conversation and interaction is key to the story---that may be one of the reasons the platform of the web affords a different means of narrative, one which we can simply absorb back into "storytelling" or decide to think closely about the possibilities for narratives a platform like the web opens up and how people are pushing that boundary.

Inentionality is a difficult ideas, and even more problematic when the medium one is working within and upon as no one fixed idea of authorship, originality, or clear cut begining middle and end. It's the challenge to think through this media that demands a critical look and argument, not opinions, nd that's what we need to think through.

I have the same issue with digital storytelling. I don't understand how it's bounded or whether the comments on a story are an external story in themselves. I mean, that's how stories spread beyond the scope of what the author originally intended. In the article, Alexander and Levine made it sound like stories are unleashed and manipulated as they spread like weeds across the web. Is that a story? Really?

First of all, I have to say that I love your theme. It is very creative and it says a lot about you. I also thought about the lonelygirl15 internet videos when the professor asked us to find an example of digital storytelling. I have not watched them either, but have read about them in magazines. People watching it at first thought it was real, but it turns out that the girl in the videos is just acting. These videos have actually jump started her career as an actress.

Also, and finally, are you going to fix the them on the mainpage of your blog, you need to do some CSS surgery to get that white area our of there. it seems like a mistake in the code, try downloading the theme again and comparing your style.css with the new one you downloaded in the theme directory.

OK, that's it, I swear.

My center tags got stripped out of the comment above, you can try wrapping the HTML tags . . (remove the periods which are preventing this comment field from stripping it out) around the image or use the CSS I included above. Both will do the trick.

Or both genius and insane ;)

We will be exploring Webcomics, so I'm hoping to see yours revealed this semester. Also, why not just wrap <code></code> tags around the bees image in the index.html? That should work, if not you can actually use a little CSS to style the image, try this:
<code>img { display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto }</code>

Take a look at this <a href="http://www.devlounge.net/code/centering-images-with-css" rel="nofollow">page</a> for an explanation. Though keep in mind, that style will now make every image in your page centered. This is were CSS IDs and Classes come in so that we can distinguish how certain images can be aligned left, right, or centered. Read a nice break down of this here:

http://www.devlounge.net/design/aligning-images-the-right-way-using-css

As for LonelyGirl15, I remember following that story, and one of the remarkable things about it was that for a while I had no idea it was fictional. Therein lies that tricky line between understanding digital storytelling as necessarily fiction or non-fiction, and for that matter even web-based. This class will be focusing to some large degree on web-based digital storytelling because it allows us to examine the question of an audience, i.e., potentially anyone. That said, I don't necessarily understand digital storytelling as either fiction or non-fiction, but rather as a means of exploring narrative through mediums that are particular to new modes and mediums for communication.

Okay, so I thought I'd check my blog before bed since I haven't checked it since yesterday and I came across what you wrote about customizing the logo at the top of your blog. Now I am going to be up for another few hours playing around with this. I blame you.

Just kidding! Thanks for the pseudo-tutorial on creating a logo!

Jar of bees,
I wonder what Engelbart thinks of our reliability on computers today. Is he happy with the outcome, is it everything he envisioned or more? Maybe he has some of he same concerns as you. He could have blogged about it, you never know...

Heehee, thanks. ^_^ I'm rather proud of it. It took a bit to figure out, but I found one with a color scheme I liked (the theme's called Snag), then turned it's title into an image rather than text. I then created an image to match my site name and through Cpanel I replaced the theme's title image.

I came across your page from our class list and I really like your layout. How did you find one to match your blog's title perfectly? Nice touch :P

I love your ideas about making real friends and connecting through spaces like forums and Facebook, these connections are indeed real, and they are still somehow thought of as "other" or alien because we still privilege a physical presence. And I think your post suggests quite nicely that a domain, or an address (a home of one;s own online) marks a recognition of how our lifes play out both on and offline. We need fewer transaction as more relations, how can you teach what you know and we reciprocate the lesson? It's a space that has been reduced to stuff, as Gardner points out beautifully, and there's no reason why we can highlight the fact that relationships often start off around a shared object of attention, but soon transcend those limitations.

And because I hate BlackBoard so, I also enjoyed the point you made about the suffocating design/space of Bb makes it hard to even communicate with people you already know, no less those you don;t. The design and ownership of a space tells a story all its own, and it will be one of the first one's we narrate this semester.

I agree with you about the "Digital Facelift." You can basically create an identity that is seperate from your real life. Although I do not use the internet as much as other people do, I am beginning to realize all of the different things that I can use it for.
